New Zealand's unit of currency is the New Zealand dollar (NZ$). Foreign currency can easily be exchanged at most banks and some hotels in North Shore City. All major credit cards can be used in New Zealand and travellers' cheques are accepted at hotels, banks and some stores. In general, banks are open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, although some banks are open in weekends. Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) are widely available at banks, along main shopping streets and in some petrol stations.

International credit cards and ATM cards will work as long as they have a four-digit PIN. Check with your bank before leaving home.

The Bank of New Zealand's website has a Foreign Exchange Calculator to work out the value of New Zealand dollars against foreign currency. To use the calculator click here.

All goods and services in New Zealand are subject to a 12.5% Goods and Services Tax (GST), which is included in the displayed price. Visitors cannot claim this tax back, however when a supplier ships a major purchase to a visitor's home address the GST will not be charged.
