While North Shore City is quite new, the communities that amalgamated in 1989 to form the new city are rich in heritage. Devonport has maintained its Victorian and Edwardian style thorughout the years while Northcote Point has many examples of fine architecture, overshadowed by the Auckland Harbour Bridge. The city has recognised these special areas by designating them heritage protection areas. The city's libraries have a weatlth of historical knowledge and detail.
Historic Devonport A heritage delight, Devonport is easy to explore on foot and has a village-like atmosphere with its cafes, art galleries, elegant villas and interesting boutique shops.
For panoramic views of the Hauraki Gulf, visit Mt Victoria, once an important maori pa, or the historic reserve of North Head with its labyrinth of military tunnels and gun emplacements built in 1885 to defend New Zealand from invasion.

Museums The area's heritage is celebrated with three museums in Devonport depicting different aspects of local and New Zealand history.
The Devonport Museum 31a Vauxhall Road (part of Mt Cambria Reserve), Devonport Open Saturday and Sunday 2pm - 4pm.
Watch out for the Historical Society's special guided walks or pick up a copy of the Old Devonport Walk from the local library or the visitor information centre.
The Navy Museum Spring Street, Devonport Ph: 09 445 5186 Open daily from 10am - 4.30pm The museum commemorates New Zealand's naval heritage and amongst the treasures on display are uniforms, weapons, medals as well as an impressive collection of photographs. One hour guided tours of the Devonport Naval Base are conducted every Saturday and Sunday at 1pm and 2.30 pm. Bookings essential ph. 09 445 5080.
Historic Maori Sites Remnants of Maori occupation in North Shore City include Te Urutapu, the sacred grove of pohutukawa near the Promenade in Takapuna. Rahopara Pa at Castor Bay, an early Maori settlement while Devonport features the Tainui Memorial on King Edward Parade and Maori Pa sites on North Head and Mt Victoria. The grave of noted Maori Chief Eru Patuone, The Peacemaker, is on the lower slope of Mt Victoria.
Herritage Walk Takapuna - Milford Herritage Walk - Voted the best walk in auckland, the popular Takapuna-Milford Walk is a scenic coastal walkway that runs from Takapuna Beach to Milford Beach. It guides you past historic interest points where the flora and geology makes for a fascinating landscape.
